Journalism & theater photography

I'm a professional photographer in Jeff City, and I hope to form relationships with media organizations who cover theater and other community events, and get feedback on my work from other photographers. Here's a bit about my experience.

Journalism

I studied Communications at BYU-Idaho, where I spent 2 years as a video reporter, and then video editor for the school newspaper. I love stories that highlight community, friendship, playfulness, and creativity.

Theater Photography

Since I've been a photographer in Jefferson City, I've been doing some theater photography, especially with my friends at Itsy Bisty Broadway. I carry forward a lot of the same concepts there: I get great cast photos and promos, but I also try to capture sets, props, and background casts to honor how everyone comes together.

The feeling of presence

One technique I love for theater photography is to get physically close with a wider lens. The perspective "distortion" from a wider lens is a better imitation of our eyes. In this image (left), it gives the viewer the feeling of sitting in the watch factory with the Radium girls.

Short story: Jon-Micheal Rutter, who directed Radium Girls at Scene One theater, encouraged me to move around stage at their dress rehearsal. The actors didn't break character or blink as I weaved around and between them. I felt like I was in a movie-- and you can tell from the pictures.

I didn't find out until later that the actors hadn't been warned...

but they loved how the pictures turned out.

Some of my work

In case you're interested, here's an example of one of the video stories I did in college. You can tell I enjoy the human element of community events, and I want everyone to feel the joy of people having fun together.
